Some people think their relationship was more like that of a sibling relationship rather than a romantic couple.
Unfortunately in 1842, Virginia got sick with tuberculosis and sadly died from it five years later when she was only 24. The couple lived in different places like Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York because of Poe’s work.
Located in Baltimore, Poe’s home has been well preserved. A lot of the exterior and interior original fabric is from the 1833-1835 period when Edgar lived here.
The Carroll Mansion

Battle Of Baltimore And The Star-Spangled Banner
The Battle of Baltimore was a pivotal conflict during the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain. It happened between September 12 and September 15, 1814.
After burning Washington, D.C., British forces turned their attention to Baltimore. British troops landed at North Point, intending to march to Baltimore. They were met with American militia, and in the subsequent fight, the British commander, General Robert Ross, was killed. While the British ultimately pushed the American militia back, the delay was crucial.
Then, the main British naval force arrived and began bombarding Fort McHenry. This fort, also mentioned above, guarded Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Even though there was intense and continuous bombardment, the fort held out, and the British were unable to penetrate Baltimore’s defenses by sea.
Unable to capture Fort McHenry and with their land advance halted, the British decided against a direct assault on Baltimore and withdrew, marking a significant American victory. The defense of Baltimore boosted American morale after the burning of Washington. This battle effectively stopped the British advance in the north.
While Fort McHenry was being attacked, Francis Scott Key, an American lawyer, was watching the battle from a British ship. He was on the British ship negotiating the release of an American prisoner.
Inspired by the sight of the American flag still flying over the fort (pictured above) after the night-long bombardment, he penned a poem titled “Defence of Fort M’Henry.” His poem was later set to music and became the United States national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
